Louise Larkin is a highly experienced lawyer responsible for directing and supporting colleagues mostly in Thompsons Solicitors’ Manchester and Liverpool centres who represent clients suffering from asbestos-related diseases.

As well as holding a post as senior supervisor in the personal injury and industrial disease team of the UK’s most experienced trade union lawyers, Louise also takes her own cases representing clients who are drawn from all over North West England.

She has acted for the victims of asbestos-related diseases for the last 25 years, operating in both England and Scotland. Having previously worked for Thompsons in Glasgow, Louise returned to the firm in October 2017.

Louise has achieved success in acting for the victims of Mesothelioma (a form of lung cancer brought on by exposure to asbestos), asbestosis, a serious long term lung condition and pleural thickening, where extensive scarring thickens the lining of the lungs. These conditions can be contracted in a wide variety of workplaces and by people involved in different jobs.

Louise writes on current legal issues and seeks to raise the profile of Thompsons’ website. She uses Twitter and social media and local newspapers in Merseyside to heighten awareness of people’s legal rights and takes a leading role in Thompsons’ PR campaigns.

Louise has a degree in law from John Moores University in Liverpool and qualified in advanced civil court work at Strathclyde University. In one case her qualifications in British Sign Language proved invaluable (please see case experience section).

Louise is renowned for her excellence in client care, ensuring clients get the best legal help available, but also that they feel supported during what can be the most stressful times in their lives.

Louise says she is proud to work for Thompsons because it never shies away from taking on the most difficult cases and often goes on to win them. “Asbestos-related diseases can be crippling and are often fatal, so I am determined that the victims and their families get the very best legal representation,” she says.

She values Thompsons’ commitment to winning justice exclusively for claimants and not those who may be responsible for the disease or their insurance companies. Louise also values Thompsons close links with the union movement going back almost 100 years.

In her spare time Louise enjoys fine dining, reading and keeping fit.

Louise's case experience

One case highlights the fact that it is not only people in construction who contract asbestos-related disease. Louise is representing Sandra Kellett who was exposed to the asbestos when she was a trainee nurse.

A mother of three and grandmother, Sandra was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2017 - more than 40 years after she came into contact with asbestos in an old hospital. She was forced to give up her career as a nurse after diagnosis with the incurable disease and now has to cope with the fact that she will be unable to see her grandchildren grow up.

One of the most rewarding cases taken on by Louise involved a man suffering from mesothelioma, who also looked after his wife on a full-time basis. She suffered from dementia and Louise secured almost £700,000 in compensation from Liverpool City Council to fund her future care. The success was achieved during the claimant’s lifetime.

Another success of which she is justly proud, involved a profoundly deaf couple. She acted for a man, who had contracted mesothelioma and later for his wife following his death. Using British Sign Language she was able to interpret for the couple during the entire legal process.
