Michelle is a highly experienced senior supervisor of the Thompsons’ Solicitors industrial disease team based in the firm’s Manchester office, covering the North West.

As well as handling her own case load, Michelle supervises members of the industrial disease team and the firm’s civil assaults lawyers who pursue claims on behalf of union members assaulted at work, for example, by patients in hospitals or residents in care homes. 

Michelle is regarded as highly successful in gaining the maximum amount of compensation for her trade union clients who are injured or suffer damage at work.  Michelle is a caring and empathetic lawyer who keeps her clients well-informed throughout the progress of the claim. 

Her caseload typically includes claims for noise induced hearing loss, damage resulting from faulty or unsafe equipment, work-related upper limb disorders, vibration damage, repetitive strain injury, workplace assaults, stress and conditions arising from exposure to substances hazardous to health (Coshh). 

With 27 years’ legal experience of personal injury claims, Michelle is regarded as a hard-working and successful advocate for union members injured at work and is leading her teams to gain the best possible outcome for their trade union clients.

Vibration white finger damage:  An aircraft painter developed vibration white finger over a period of 40 years as a result of sanding large sections of aircraft before painting them.  Initially, he sandpapered by hand, but in the late 70s he switched to a Dynabrade sander that emitted high levels of vibration.  He suffered with blanching, numbness and tingling and had problems gripping.  He was offered no training or advice and there was no monitoring, towards the end of his employment, he was given anti-vibration gloves.

Liability was denied and Michelle took on the case, obtaining an engineer’s report that confirmed he was exposed to vibration in excess of recommended levels. The case was settled for a five-figure sum before trial.   

Occupational asthma from cleaning chemical Chlor-Clean:  Michelle took on the case of two UNISON members, both hospital cleaners, who contracted occupational asthma as a result of breathing in fumes from Chlor-Clean – a powerful cleaner and disinfectant used to prevent infections in hospitals.  The NHS had transferred them to an employment contractor who told them to use the chemical for every aspect of the cleaning routine in the ICU.   They were not given proper training to use the product safely, were not provided with suitable personal protection equipment, nor given sufficient equipment in which to dissolve the product safely in a suitably ventilated room.  Despite the defendants vigorously denying liability, Michelle achieved a successful settlement of £10,000.

Frequent back pain caused by badly positioned desk: When a school receptionist, was moved to a new desk and work area, she found she had to stretch and twist to see the main door area, operate the door release, speak to colleagues or reach various materials.  She moved her equipment so she could see the door, but was told to move it back.  She worked for a couple of months with some discomfort but then her symptoms increased and she started to suffer frequent pain.  Michelle issued proceedings, negotiations commenced and settled the claim for a four-figure sum.
