Sukhdev Gill is a key member of Thompsons Solicitors’ clinical negligence team, based at the firm’s Birmingham office.

Sukhdev specialises in claims involving tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) operations. The controversial mesh sling implants are used to treat urinary incontinence. However some women experience pain, infection, damage to organs and sexual problems following the procedure and there are demands for it to be banned.

Sukhdev investigates cases for clients who have had a mesh procedure such as TVT, rectopexy, sacrocolpopexy and colporrhaphy. It is her task to establish if the mesh surgery was appropriate and if the client was given the correct advice in order that she could grant her informed consent to the procedure. As part of her work Sukhdev has developed considerable general expertise in gynaecological and urogynaecological issues.

Sukhdev’s key responsibilities involve meeting and speaking to clients, investigating potential claims and advising clients. She scrutinises medical records, instructs medical experts and considers their evidence to establish if the client has a case.

Sukhdev is praised by her clients for being highly approachable and professional. She is dedicated to seeking justice for women damaged by the TVT products. As part of her approach to casework, Sukhdev makes every effort to keep clients informed about the progress of their cases.

Sukhdev will always put maximum effort into recovering the largest possible compensation in the shortest possible time. She says the most rewarding element of working for Thompsons is its “unique” insistence in only representing claimants.

As part of her work on medical negligence cases she has also investigated brain injury, cauda equina (involving damage to the nerves below the spinal column) and misdiagnosis of cancer cases. Previously Sukhdev dealt with accidents at work, industrial diseases and personal injury.

Away from work Sukhdev enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters.

Case Experience

An Appeal hearing found in favour of a case Sukhdev ran on personal protective equipment regulations. The High Court (Queen's Bench Division) decided that the University of East Anglia had been negligent in its failure to provide plumber John Spalding with a non-slip mat when he was working on a wet carpet and that the appellant’s risk assessment had not gone far enough.

Sukhdev ran a successful case where the claimant suffered damage to her brain during sinus surgery. Unfortunately during the course of the procedure she suffered an injury which later resulted in a subdural haemorrhage, where blood collected between the skull and the surface of the brain.

Substandard management of an eye condition by an NHS trust meant that the claimant was left with total loss of vision in one eye. Sukhdev won substantial compensation for her client. Failure to assess the claimant and administer appropriate medication following surgery causing the claimant to develop a DVT and a pulmonary embolism.

A man who seriously injured his hand at work was contacted by his employer’s insurance company immediately after the accident and before he’d had a chance to speak to a solicitor.

He then got in touch with Thompsons and Sukhdev dealt with his case. With her help, he received over £30,000 which was almost a third more than he was offered to begin with.
