Andrew Yaw is a highly experienced member of Thompsons Solicitors’ medical negligence team, covering the North West. Since qualifying as a solicitor 16 years ago, he has only ever acted for claimants. He has dealt with a wide range of complex clinical negligence and personal injury cases, settling claims out of court where it is beneficial for the client, or pursuing litigation to trial when required.

Andrew has specialised in medical negligence for more than two years, dealing with a wide range of claims involving significant injuries and sometimes, unfortunately, death.

Among the cases he has taken was one in which failure to diagnose and treat acute appendicitis led to life-threatening complications.

In other cases, Andrew supported a case where medical staff failed to adequately advise a patient in respect of the contraction of MRSA, leading to recurring abscesses over a period of 5 years, as well as a patient who was negligently discharged, leading to an acute coronary event. 

Andrew’s aim is to recover the highest possible compensation for victims of medical negligence in a professional but empathetic way. Andrew fully appreciates that when clients come to him they are inevitably suffering one of the most traumatic periods of their lives.

Andrew values his role at Thompsons because of the firm’s insistence on only representing the injured party or their relatives, and never those who might be responsible for the injury or insurance companies. Andrew’s case experience

Delayed diagnosis client: Andrew acted for a specialist construction worker following a failure to treat a chest infection with antibiotics, leading to the client suffering from pneumonia and empyema. The client eventually required an operation and has left him with a permanent breathing problem. Andrew recovered compensation of £25,000.

Medical negligence client: Andrew recovered compensation for a UNISON member acting on behalf of the estate of his late mother, who received negligent treatment in hospital, leading to avoidable pain and suffering and unfortunately death. Despite a coroner heavily criticising the treatment provided, the NHS denied breach of duty. Formal medical evidence was obtained in support of the claim and legal proceedings were issued and served on the NHS trust. The claim was settled shortly after.
