The Ministry of Justice is understood to have said that increasing the small claims limit is not their priority
In response to reports that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is unenthusiastic about forcing through a rise in the small claims limit, Thompsons’ head of policy, Tom Jones, discusses the need for greater scrutiny of what car insurers are saying.
Proposals to increase the small claims limit from £1,000 to £5,000 were first announced in the 2015 Autumn Statement and have been pushed by motor insurers ever since. Thompsons has worked tirelessly in opposition of these proposals, which would severely restrict the access to justice for the majority of injured motorists.
While it’s unlikely that the MoJ’s rethink will stop insurers making wild claims about fraud, we want the insurance industry to answer serious, fundamental questions about how it operates.
