The House of Lords has just ruled in favour of 36 school dinner ladies who claimed they were victimised by St Helens Borough Council in Merseyside after they brought equal pay claims against the local authority.
Although the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 outlawed discrimination on the basis of someone’s religion or belief, they also allowed for a number of exceptions.
As with nearly all discrimination legislation, the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 outlaw both direct (less favourable treatment) and indirect discrimination on religion or belief grounds.
