Gareth Carter is a key member of Thompsons Solicitors’ personal injury team operating out of the firm’s Manchester office, but taking cases from all over England and Wales.
Having joined Thompsons in 2016, Gareth deals with litigation involving a wide variety of accidents - at work, on the road, on aircraft, on-board ship - both in the UK and abroad.
An associate member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, Gareth runs his own caseload of personal injury claims which invariably involve a foreign aspect. As part of his work, he consults with agents and lawyers in other countries to ensure the best possible outcome for his clients, whether they were injured abroad or in this country. Gareth runs cases from inception to either settlement or trial.
Having worked at another national law firm for two years as a legal advisor, Gareth points out that as a trade union law firm, Thompsons Solicitors has union members’ interests at heart and the firm is dedicated to supporting the wider trade union movement. “Few law firms have the depth of experience and the clearly-stated aims of Thompsons,” he says.
Away from work, Gareth enjoys running, reading and travelling.
GARETH’S CASE EXPERIENCE
Gareth has successfully brought claims involving orthopaedic injuries sustained in accidents in various countries, including France, Poland, Germany, Spain, Belgium and the USA. He also has a great deal of experience in pursuing claims where the accident has occurred in the UK but with defendants based abroad. The procedures, requirements and timescales in these cases are different to most road traffic accident claims and require specialist input. Time limits for bringing claims of this kind for example can vary depending on where the accident occurred.
He has taken many cases involving aircraft, including injuries caused to passengers because of safety failures by commercial airlines. Others related to shipping, involving ferries, cruises and accidents at ports.
He has also brought court proceedings in the Admiralty Court - which is a specialist part of the High Court in London - on behalf of workers injured during the course of their duties. Accidents on-board ships require input from someone who is familiar with Admiralty Court claims and processes. As an important element of his responsibilities, he has brought claims on behalf of flight attendants injured at work. These include cases where fittings have fallen and injured cabin crew and where attendants have suffered trips and falls due to hazards created by their employers.

Mrs C, road accident client, said: “Gareth has been so wonderful in how he has helped me all the way through my claim. I cannot thank Gareth enough, so polite and so professional. Always so happy to help me with anything I needed to know.”
