Lisa Gunner is a serious injury solicitor based in Thompsons Solicitors' Bristol and Cardiff offices, and is manager of the team specialising in criminal negligence, serious injury and crime, taking clients from across the South West of England and South Wales.
Lisa has successfully represented both adults and children and specialises in life-changing injury claims covering brain and spinal injuries, amputations and psychiatric injury. The cases involving catastrophic injuries are often worth in excess of £1m. Many of the injuries are sustained at work, in road traffic accidents and involving both occupiers and public liability.
Lisa works hard for every client she represents and always strives to recover the maximum amount of compensation in the shortest possible time. Lisa has experience in instructing multi-disciplinary teams of experts to run rehabilitation programmes for her seriously injured clients, funded by the claim. It is always her aim to secure interim payments to ensure that the rehabilitation starts as quickly as possible and covers past financial loss.
Lisa is proud of Thompsons’ policy of only representing injured parties and never those who may be responsible for those injuries. She says that everyone working for Thompsons pursues a common goal pursuing claims for those injured or unfairly treated whilst working as a team with the firm’s union clients.
In her spare time Lisa enjoys horse riding, pilates and listening to live music.
LISA’S CASE EXPERIENCE
Amputation claim: Lisa represented a Unite member who lost three fingers in an accident at work while operating a dangerous printing machine. The man’s fingers became trapped between two rollers which were not protected by a suitable guard. The injured man could not return to work after the accident and understandably struggled with everyday tasks. Lisa used her skill and experience to claim a substantial sum in compensation for the injured man which in part has been used to fund the purchase of two prosthetic fingers from revolutionary company Touch Bionics (the third finger he lost has been replaced by his toe).Without the compensation it would have been impossible for the client to purchase the prosthetic fingers which make it easier for him to cope with everyday activities and to be positive about the future.
Serious Injury claim: Lisa acted for a GMB member who sustained life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car driven by a driver who was over the drink-drive limit. His injuries included a serious brain trauma, a punctured lung, complex open elbow fracture, radial nerve palsy in the left arm and fractured pelvis, tibia and femur. The claimant underwent numerous operations and spent a prolonged period in hospital. Despite surgery, he was left with limited use of his dominant arm, restricted mobility and a persistent disabling pain. The accident significantly restricted the claimant’s daily activities and he was unable to return to any form of employment. The claimant needed daily care and assistance together with various aids and equipment. Lisa secured substantial compensation for the man who was delighted with the outcome.
Brain Injury Claim: Lisa acted for a Unite member who was struck by a stolen car and sustained life-changing injuries which included a severe brain trauma which affected his life on a day-to-day basis. The injuries were so severe that he was left unable to live independently and required lifelong support and care. He was also unable to manage his own financial affairs and a deputy had to be appointed. A comprehensive and successful rehabilitation package was arranged by Lisa through the case manager she appointed. This package was praised by all experts involved in the claim and the settlement which was approved by the court.
Lisa has achieved accreditation from the Law Society for Personal Injury and is a member of The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and Headway, the brain injury charity.
Lisa is recommended by Chambers and Partners UK (a directory of leading law firms) for claimant personal injury law. In listing Lisa as a notable practitioner it says she offers a “combination of tact, practicality and intelligence" and has "a real focus on achieving good results for her clients.”
A personal testimony from an NUJ member said: “I appreciate your wishes and obvious feeling of care and regret for me. I very much also appreciate the work that you have done on my case to get to this point. I know it hasn’t always been easy to access the information you needed to, but you have clearly tried very hard and got there in the end, even pursing avenues that I didn’t realise or wasn’t aware of. I am very grateful to you for the effort you have put in. I do believe you have done your utmost.”
A Unite member said: “We would like to offer our gratitude for everything that you have done for us over the last three years. Your help has been invaluable through our difficult times.”
