An Essex pensioner injured after being hit by a car has received more than £9,500 compensation.

Edward Love, 86, was crossing St Albans Road in Ilford when he was hit by a car. He suffered injuries to his chest, knees, as well as bruising across his body.

The accident left Edward in pain for several months, making walking and everyday tasks such as cleaning more difficult. He continues to suffer from anxiety when near busy traffic.

Edward instructed road traffic accident specialists, Thompsons Solicitors, to make a personal injury compensation claim. They secured more than £9,500 for him, but changes to the small claims limit could leave people like Edward without access to free legal support.

“The accident really shook me up,” he said. “Even after the injuries healed, the worry remained. The driver wasn’t paying attention to the road. I would dread to think how much worse this could have been if they had been going any faster.

“Thompsons Solicitors fought on my behalf and made sure I wasn’t left to cope with my injuries alone. If these government proposals come into force, however, that support will be severely limited. All it is going to do is discourage other people from turning to the excellent services of Thompsons Solicitors after they’ve been injured, through no fault of their own.”

Joanne Duggan, of Thompsons Solicitors, said: “While road safety in the UK has certainly improved, we still see thousands of people killed and seriously injured on the roads every year.

“Edward’s injuries eventually healed but his anxiety on the roads may never truly pass, all because a road user lost concentration. What’s needed is greater education for drivers and harsher punishments for those who flout the rules, not changes to a small claims limit that could leave honest, injured people out of pocket.”
